Q: How does a remote control actually work?
A: The remote has an infrared LED that sends out pulses of invisible light. A photo-diode in the receiver detects these pulses. The pulses are a little like Morse code. If the correct codes are detected, the receiving unit executes your command.

I've been a big home theater buff for years and now that I've plugged my computer into my big flat screen I can watch whatever I want on my tv. The problem is I can't control my pc with my remote in the same way I can my cable/satellite or dvd player.
